Taking your career forward faster

Taking your career forward faster

We all want to get ahead and take our lives and careers forward. We all have different goals to achieve, but how many of us have really taken control of achieving them?

No matter what you want to achieve in your career, there are some very simple and proven methods that you can follow to make these dreams a reality. Working hard is just one small part of what separates the successful from the wannabes. To be truly successful smart planning, positive attitude and a focused and resilient mindset are all equally important.

Here are my thoughts on 5 key steps on the ladder of professional success:

1. Set your goals

In his “7 Habits” Steven Covey says “Begin with the end in mind”. Planning is the most important step in achieving our goals, and it is critical to write these down and ensure that they sit comfortably with your personal value system. Plan to be what you truly want to be, and ensure that you revisit these goals regularly to ensure that they continue to match your current thinking.

2. Keep a positive attitude

Maintaining a positive attitude is essential. A working day can throw many different challenges at you that cannot be simply wished away. They must be faced head on and overcome. Nothing worth having comes easily. Maintain your positive attitude even in the toughest situations. Remember, It is much more fun to be positive.

3. Stay focused

If you want to be successful in achieving your career goals, then you need to stay focused. After the initial stages of career planning, there can be a tendency to lose focus. You must train yourself to concentrate on your goals and stay motivated at all times. Constantly review your career plans. Try visualisation. Place yourself mentally in a position where you have already achieved your objectives and try to savour the feeling. Imagine the responses of colleagues, family and friends. This will boost your confidence level tremendously and lead to a drastic change for the better in your attitude towards life, consequently leading to success.

4. Be tenacious

Don’t let things get in your way. You need to be absolutely certain in your mind of that you want and know that giving up is not an option. There really is no easy way to success, you have to face the challenges, overcome them and focus on your long term goals.

5. Take things one step at a time

By breaking down a large task into small parts it becomes far more manageable. Place these small parts in order of priority and concentrate on achieving each one step at a time. Enjoy your success along the way, and celebrate your achievements. A successful career is to be enjoyed!
