Try, try, try again

Try, try, try again

“If at first you don’t succeed, before you try again, stop to figure out what you did wrong.”
– Leo Rosten US (Polish-born) author (1908 – )

I love this quote from Leo Rosten. I believe hugely in effort and resilience. To be successful you must find a passion for what you do, get your hands dirty and really go for it. But, what so many people do is ignore the excellent feedback available to all of us from getting it wrong the first time we try.

Learn from your mistakes

We all make mistakes. We make them all the time. But those who analyse and adjust their behaviours to improve the next time, are the ones who really succeed.

As a new consultant my tactics were really simple. I very carefully watched the top guys around me, analysing what they did that made them so good. I copied their phrases and their processes. I amended them to my own style and I worked at making myself better and better all the time. Each cold call, each client meeting, each candidate interview, I took time afterward to analyse what went right and what went wrong. I tried to learn from each experience, to constantly improve myself.

And did it help? Yes absolutely it did.

There is no doubt that to compete and then succeed in today’s business market, you need to be at the top of your game at all times, whilst remaining fiercely resilient. Try, try, try again.

Try, stop, analyse, re-frame, try again. Make the most of every opportunity. Be the best you can be. And then, analyse, and be better, and try again.
